FTC Guidelines

There have been a number of news stories about the Federal Trade Commission’s updated guidelines for endorsements and how these affect bloggers. Here’s the actual notice from the FTC: FTC Publishes Final Guides Governing Endorsements, Testimonials. You can also look at the full text of the guidelines, linked from “Related Items” in the right-side navigation. Here’s a direct link: Text of the Federal Register Notice. Given the proximity of blogging to ordinary speech by individuals — you don’t need to form a company to write a blog — there will probably be free speech issues to work out.

Mobile posting, part two

Yesterday’s mobile experiment had a brief rocky moment. After completing the post and hitting send, the program returned pretty quickly. To see if the post actually made it up, I opened the Browser and navigated to this blog. Nothing. I started to retype the message, then noticed the “Publish?” option in the entry form. The default value was unchecked. Aha. I went back to the browser, logged into WordPress and checked my drafts. Bingo, the new post was there, picture and all. I hit the Publish button and out it went.

So far I’m calling this a success. The next step is to wire blogpost alerts into twitter and facebook. Just need to find the right connectors.
